In 2024, UN Member States adopted the Pact for the Future and its annexes: the Declaration on Future Generations and the Global Digital Compact establishing a shared set of commitments to address global challenges across sustainable development, peace and security, digital governance, financing for development, and the reform of global institutions.
As the international community moves toward the 2028 High-Level Review of the Pact for the Future, civil society has a vital role to play in ensuring these commitments translate into meaningful action. Civil society organizations contribute by monitoring implementation, identifying gaps and priorities, bringing regional perspectives and expertise, and holding institutions accountable.
These discussions also take place in the context of the UN80 Initiative, launched to support the modernization of the UN system in response to evolving global challenges and institutional pressures. Together, these processes are shaping ongoing debates about the future of multilateral cooperation.
To support this engagement, the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) is convening the 2026 Regional Futures Forums, a series of civil society-led consultations bringing together organizations and stakeholders from around the world. Six forums will be held between February and April 2026, covering Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Arab States, Europe, and Latin America.
The Regional Futures Forums provide a space for civil society actors to share regional perspectives on the implementation of the Pact for the Future, discuss emerging priorities, and explore how global governance can evolve to better respond to the needs of people and communities. Each forum will focus on regional realities while contributing to a broader global conversation on the future of multilateral cooperation.
The insights and recommendations emerging from these consultations will feed directly into the Global Futures Forum 2026, taking place on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum in New York, and will contribute to the development of a People’s Framework to help inform the 2028 review of the Pact for the Future.
Through this process, the Regional Futures Forums aim to strengthen civil society participation in shaping the future of the United Nations, contribute regional insights to ongoing global governance discussions, and help define a people-centered vision for the UN as it looks ahead to the post-2030 period and its centenary in 2045.
