Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN)

Steering Committee (2021-2023)

Call for Nominations

Deadline: March 26 2021

In December 2020, UN2020 adopted its forward looking three-year strategic plan (2021-2023) which includes a reorganization of its management and engagement structures to make it more democratic, inclusive and representative of global civil society as we make the transition from UN2020 into the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN).

The C4UN strategic plan has initiated a restructuring process to support future civil society action and the outcomes arising from both the UN75 Political Declaration (A/RES/75/1) and the UN75 People’s Declaration and Plan for Global Action. It calls for the replacement of the UN2020 Coordination Group with a C4UN Steering Committee composed of the Secretariat (as non-voting members) and nine elected Partner organizations serving two-year terms, with half elected each year, to represent the leadership of the coalition.

C4UN Nomination Committee

During this transition phase, a Nomination Committee shall be appointed by the UN2020 Coordination Group that will select a fixed slate of nominees for the C4UN Steering Committee to be presented to the UN2020 Coordination Group and announced to the membership at large. The three person Nomination Committee will consist of one representative each from the Secretariat,  the UN2020 Coordination Group and a Partner organization.

For now, this will be a selection process, not an election, so questions about voting procedures and entitlements for future elections can be decided by the Steering Committee once it is established.

C4UN Steering Committee

  • Steering Committee composition:
    • The Secretariat (as non-voting members) and nine representatives of Partner member organizations. They shall serve two-year terms with half selected each year, and representing the leadership of the network.
    • To ensure continuity of the Steering Committee and balance between old and new participants in the transition from UN2020 to C4UN, two current representatives of member organizations of the UN2020 Coordination Group will have a two-year term, along with three representatives of new Partner organizations making a two-year commitment, and representatives of two current member organizations and of two new Partner organizations making a one-year commitment.
    • Two co-facilitators will be elected by and from the members of the Steering Committee. They will represent Partner organizations from the global north and south, and serve as the face of the network to the outside world.
    • Should be diverse across a number of criteria: regional representation, organization type, and area of work.  Individual representatives of Partner member organizations should be equally diverse along gender, age, and other dimensions.
  • Steering Committee member requirements:
    • Must be a representative and member of a Partner organization.
    • Steering Committee members cannot serve more than two consecutive terms.
    • No Partner organization may have more than one representative on the Steering Committee. A representative may designate an alternate from his/her organization when unavailable to participate.
    • Steering Committee members will function as co-chairs/co-facilitators of the standing committees and the thematic work groups (along with a Secretariat support).
    • The Steering Committee is responsible for determining the financial contributions from Partner organizations.
