Who We Are
The Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) is a global platform of civil society organizations committed to creating a stronger, more effective, and more accountable United Nations system. Established in 2017, C4UN brings together more than 7,000 individuals and organizations from all regions and sectors to strengthen civil society engagement in UN reform and global governance renewal.
Recognized as a trusted convener and facilitator, C4UN has contributed to key milestones including the UN75 Declaration, the Our Common Agenda report, and the 2024 Summit of the Future. The Coalition co-hosted the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, helping build the global constituency now pushing for a more inclusive, transparent, and results-oriented UN system.
Vision
To transform the UN system by promoting inclusive, people-centered multilateralism in partnership with civil society, governments, and the United Nations
Mission
We provide an open forum for civil society, the United Nations, and Member States to promote the renewal, innovation, and strengthening of the UN system. We support and initiate partnerships, activities, campaigns, information-gathering and sharing, progressive ideas, leadership, and advocacy to shed light on key global governance reforms and co-create an enabling environment for change.
Strategic Priorities (2025–2028)
- Make the Pact for the Future Count: Act as a global hub for civil society follow-up on the UN Pact for the Future by mapping actors and commitments, monitoring implementation, supporting ImPact Coalitions, and feeding civil society recommendations back to the UN and Member States.
- Strengthen the Constituency for Global Governance Reform: Broaden and diversify the global movement for UN reform through regional and global Futures Forums, strategic advocacy, and outreach to new constituencies, particularly in the Global South.
- Defend Multilateral Institutions in a World of Rising Authoritarianism: Mobilize collective advocacy when multilateral institutions are under attack, promote awareness of the importance of global governance through media engagement, and build alliances between civil society and Member States defending multilateralism.
- Professionalize C4UN’s Operations and Governance: Consolidate C4UN as a sustainable, independent organization with new leadership, a growing team, strengthened financial systems, and improved membership management.
How We Work
C4UN:
- Educates and empowers civil society organizations to engage in UN processes through knowledge production, capacity building, and strategic guidance.
- Shares civil society perspectives with the UN and its Member States by consulting, convening, and collaborating.
- Shines a light on key global governance reforms through advocacy and the exchange of information.
- Creates an enabling environment for change by promoting the need for global governance reform and civil society inclusion among Member States, the UN Secretariat, the media, and the public.
